Acacia (Robinia pseudoacacia), often called “akacija” here, is a deciduous tree recognised by its white, hanging clusters of strongly sweet-scented flowers. It loves sunny positions and well-drained soil, so we most often find it on the edges of forests, meadows, along paths and in river valleys. In Croatia it is especially widespread in the Pannonian part of the country – Slavonia, Podravina, Posavina and Međimurje.
During the acacia flowering period, bees intensively gather nectar from these fragrant blossoms and turn it into acacia honey – one of the most valued and best-known types of honey. Thanks to its gentleness, mild flavour and very light colour, it is loved by both children and adults and is often the first choice for those who are just starting to consume honey.
Acacia honey is best enjoyed on its own by the spoonful or in lukewarm tea, with breakfast, cereals, fruit or yogurt. As with any honey, it is not recommended for children under one year of age. With regular consumption, alongside a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, acacia honey can be a valuable ally in supporting the body.
